Newer versions of Windows utilize a mechanism to accelerate the boot process. On Windows XP and Vista systems, the operating system must load many individual pieces of files during the boot-up process for the operating system and applications.Windows maintains a record of the pieces that are loaded during the boot process in a folder. Subsequent rebooting can use this trace to identify files that would be more efficient to load entirely at one time, instead of loading individual pieces across multiple reads of the hard disk. This prefetch mechanism can accelerate the overall performance of the computer.
However, the method of deciding which files to load may not be efficient for Firefox and can require significant CPU resources. You may experience faster performance by removing prefetch files on Windows XP or Windows Vista systems. The prefetch files are stored here: C:\Windows\Prefetch\

There are some things that we can do to reduce FirefoxCPU usage, like:
Disable the Java plugin, by going to Tools>Options>Content tab> uncheck Enable Java. Most sites do not use Java. So, you end up wasting CPU resources for a plugin(yes, it is sorta plugin) that you do not use.
Disable Images by going to Tools>Options>Content tab> uncheck Load Images automatically. It may sound stupid, but many designers go overboard and add several image backgrounds, coupled with post images. Taking out those darn images out of the equation can work, especially on older PCs. Note that this is a last ditch effort, and you should try other methods mentioned here before trying this one.
Open fewer tabs. By this, I mean that you should not open more than ~10 tabs. The more tabs you have, the more memory Firefox consumes. Experiment with the number and come up with an optimal number for your PC.
Cut down on the number of extensions used. More specifically, try to remove those extensions which access internet to update information for each site(Alexa toolbar, PR tools, StumbleUpon toolbar etc.).

The urlclassifier2.sqlite file contains information on known phishing sites that is used to warn you should you visit one. The information is downloaded by default from a Google database once a day. This functionality can be modified or turned off in “Tools → Options → Security
Firefox 3 contacts Google at each startup to get an updated list of known phishing websites and updates the same in the urlclassifier3.sqlite file. Agreed this is what makes our browser safe and secure but why is it bloating up in size? Are the phishing sites on the web increasing as fast as the size of this folder? Naah! Apparently, there’s a known bug in FF specific to this urlclassifier file which says that it has a lot of vacuum/blank space within and there ought to be a mechanism to automatically compress it effectively.Whatever might be the cause, its rapid size increase is somewhat disconcerting. Added to it is the fact that upon each startup, FF contacts the Google servers to get an updated list, which might be a drain on the CPU resources and in turn the notebook batteries (if you’re using one i.e.). There have been discussions about it over at the Mozillazine Forums in this thread and this thread and there seem to be a lot of people disconcerted by it.
The Solution? Well, the knowledge bas article suggested turning off the Phishing options in FF, which would mean unchecking of the following options under Tools>Options>Security:
Type about:config into the address bar, and then put the following into the filter box: browser.search.openintab. Double-click the value to change it to true.
