Advantage of having solid state hard drives

Solid State Hard Drives Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages:

  • Faster start-up because no spin-up is required.
  • Fast random access because there is no read/write head[14]
    • Low read latency times for RAM drives.[15] In applications where hard disk seeks are the limiting factor, this results in faster boot and application launch times (see Amdahl's law).[16]
    • Consistent read performance because physical location of data is irrelevant for SSDs.[17]
    • File fragmentation has negligible effect.
  • Silent operation due to the lack of moving parts.
  • Low capacity flash SSDs have a low power consumption and generate little heat when in use.
  • High mechanical reliability, as the lack of moving parts almost eliminates the risk of "mechanical" failure.
  • Ability to endure extreme shock, high altitude, vibration and extremes of temperature.[18][19] This makes SSDs useful for laptops, mobile computers, and devices that operate in extreme conditions (flash).[16]
  • For low-capacity SSDs, lower weight and size: although size and weight per unit storage are still better for traditional hard drives, and microdrives allow up to 20 GB storage in a CompactFlash form-factor. As of 2008 SSDs up to 256 GB are lighter than hard drives of the same capacity.[18]
  • Flash SSDs have twice the data density of HDDs (so far, with very recent and major developments of improving SSD densities), even up to 1TB disks[20][21] (currently more than 2TB is atypical even for HDDs)[22]). One example of this advantage is that portable devices such as a smartphone may hold as much as a typical person's desktop PC.
  • Failures occur less frequently while writing/erasing data, which means there is a lower chance of irrecoverable data damage.[23]
  • Defragmenting the SSD is unnecessary. Since SSDs are random access by nature and can perform parallel reads on multiple sections of the drive (as opposed to a HDD, which requires seek time for each fragment, assuming a single head assembly), a certain degree of fragmentation is actually better for reads, and wear leveling intrinsically induces fragmentation.[24] In fact, defragmenting a SSD is harmful since it adds wear to the SSD for no benefit.

Disadvantages:

  • Flash-memory drives have limited lifetimes and will often wear out after 1,000,000 to 2,000,000 write cycles (1,000 to 10,000 per cell) for MLC, and up to 5,000,000 write cycles (100,000 per cell) for SLC.[26][27][28][29] Special file systems or firmware designs can mitigate this problem by spreading writes over the entire device, called wear leveling.[30]
  • Wear leveling used on flash-based SSDs has security implications. For example, encryption of existing unencrypted data on flash-based SSDs cannot be performed securely due to the fact that wear leveling causes new encrypted drive sectors to be written to a physical location different from their original location—data remains unencrypted in the original physical location. It is also impossible to securely wipe files by overwriting their content on flash-based SSDs.[citation needed]
  • As of early-2010, SSDs are still more expensive per gigabyte than hard drives. Whereas a normal flash drive is US$2 per gigabyte, hard drives are around US$0.10 per gigabyte for 3.5", or US$0.20 for 2.5".
  • The capacity of SSDs is currently lower than that of hard drives. However, flash SSD capacity is predicted to increase rapidly, with drives of 1 TB already released for enterprise and industrial applications.[21][31][32][33][34]
  • Asymmetric read vs. write performance can cause problems with certain functions where the read and write operations are expected to be completed in a similar timeframe. SSDs currently have a much slower write performance compared to their read performance.[35]
  • Similarly, SSD write performance is significantly impacted by the availability of free, programmable blocks. Previously written data blocks that are no longer in use can be reclaimed by TRIM; however, even with TRIM, fewer free, programmable blocks translates into reduced performance.[36]
  • As a result of wear leveling and write combining, the performance of SSDs degrades with use.[37][38]
  • SATA-based SSDs generally exhibit much slower write speeds. As erase blocks on flash-based SSDs generally are quite large (e.g. 0.5 - 1 megabyte),[9] they are far slower than conventional disks during small writes (write amplification effect) and can suffer from write fragmentation.[39] Modern PCIe SSDs however have much faster write speeds than previously available.
  • DRAM-based SSDs (but not flash-based SSDs) require more power than hard disks, when operating; they still use power when the computer is turned off, while hard disks do not.[40]

TechNews: Google testing desktop Google Voice

Report: Google testing desktop Google Voice

Gizmo5

Gizmo5's old product, acquired by Google in November.

Google continues to evolve its Google Voice product, with reports it's testing a desktop-based version inside the Googleplex.

TechCrunch says that Google has been internally testing a desktop Google Voice application this week, the fruits of its acquisition of Gizmo5 last year. This would allow Google Voice users to treat their PC or Mac like a phone, bypassing the current requirement that Google Voice service be connected to a phone.

It's not clear when such an application may launch, according to TechCrunch. Skype is probably the most recognizable name in this space, although VoIP clients such as Gizmo5's old product aren't exactly novel. Google's edge could be the blend of Web services it already offers integrated into its product.

HP Slate VS. IPAD

HP Slate To Have a Faster Processor, More Storage and Two Cameras

With the whole world drooling for the recently launched Apple iPad, HP is trying to assure its employees, through an internal presentation, that HP Slate wouldn’t be anything less than competitive. As Engadget reports, HP Slate will have a 1.6 GHz processor compared to iPad’s 1 GHz, and the minimum storage would be 32 GB compared to iPad’s 16 GB.

HP Slate will also have an SD/SDHC.SDXC Card Reader providing up to 12 GB of extra storage for all those movies and songs. It will run on the very successful Windows 7 Home Premium edition and will have a VGA Webcam. While Webcam and SD Card give a big advantage to HP Slate, the smaller screen, lower-performing battery and an extra 50 bucks would make it difficult for HP to win the hearts.

Some other specs also include a 1 GB RAM, USB Port, a 1024 x 600 multi-touch display, an extra 3MP outward facing camera and an HDMI outlet. The whole list of specs is displayed below via Engadget.

http://cache.techie-buzz.com/images/stories/slatevsipad.png

Over all, iPad might be the better looking one of two, but when it comes to functionality and possible integration with other devices such as Computers and Mobile Phones, I believe HP Slate would be better off.  What do you think? Would you wait for an HP Slate or are rushing to get an iPad right now?

Screen Recording - Create a Screencast Like A Pro

ScreenToaster has evolved into a superb tool that captures your screencasts the easy way. It’s the only service in this list that lets you choose Playback Speed (half as fast, twice as fast, and up to 10 times faster), a feature you’d see on paid apps, such as the $99 ScreenFlow application for Mac.

Other unique features are its offering to record from your webcam, add Subtitles, in a fashion similar to adding YouTube annotations (which you could do later since you can actually also upload the screencast to YouTube), and record audio for inclusion even after you recorded your screencast. There’re also two versions: the new Beta version records with HD quality.

what is a screencast

While there are no limitations in duration, ScreenToaster recommends 20MB as the maximum size for “optimized performance”. Right after you have recorded your screencast, ScreenToaster will let you download the screencast in MOV and SWF formats (the latter is experimental so you may get errors), which you might want to do at that instance since this option isn’t available after you publish your video to the ScreenToaster’s servers. In the Beta version though, you get to download the screencast in MP4 format even after it’s published.

http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/ituneslogo.jpgToday, I’m going to cover how to remove duplicate tracks from iTunes. During my recent Windows 7 rebuild, I made a number of strategic errors. Nothing devastating, unless you include the mess I seem to have got my once pristine iTunes library in. I’ve ended up with everything I need… and more. I’m going to talk you through what you can do to remove duplicates in iTunes.

I’m a Windows guy, so some of your options will certainly differ if you’re one of those Apple types. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Remove Duplicates from iTunes – Before we start

We’ve talked about iTunes before. A lot! Relating to this particular subject, David Pierce explained how to use TidySongs to manage iTunes, and more broadly, Jackson produced a great eBook to help with all your iTunes needs.

How did this happen?

If only I knew. It’s a combination of recopying files to the machine after the rebuild, using the wonderful SharePod to rebuild the library, and some peculiar choices in the iTunes options.

Never mind. That’s ancient history, and there are many paths to this place. Doubtless, you took a different one.

Things to check

There are two things you want to make sure of before proceeding to remove duplicates from iTunes, and one general word of warning.

First, the warning. Please, please ensure you have backups in place in case any of this goes wrong. You are going to delete files, and you want to be sure you can get them back if nothing else.

If you are allowing iTunes to manage your files, you can just copy the entire iTunes folder (and all the subfolders) somewhere else. If you are managing the files yourself, take a look and be sure where you stand. Missing tracks is much worse than duplicate tracks.

remove duplicates from iTunes

There are two different ways that you can end up with duplicate tracks listed in iTunes. We ware here to remove actual duplicates. But first you need to check if you have duplicate items listed, but they are actually the same files. You can do this by sorting the tracks in name order (click on the Name column header), then right clicking one of the duplicates, and choosing Get Info.

remove duplicates from iTunes

Click on the Summary tab, and take a look at the file path after the Where: and then click on the Previous and Next buttons and compare the duplicates. Make sure the file names are at least a little bit different, or deleting one will delete both. In my case I have an Africa.mp3 and an Africa(1).mp3, for example.

The other thing to watch for is that the tracks are not near-duplicates. You know the stuff. You have the studio version, the live one, the unplugged one from the Nineties, the extended dance remix… be sure you really want to get rid of those. Oh, lose the dance one. Go on.

Search and Eliminate

You probably already know you have some, and sorting your library by Title will certainly make it more apparent. If you have a small library, perhaps that’s all the help you need. It’s not going to work for me. I’ll still be working on it next year.

remove duplicates from iTunes

The first level of assistance is to ask iTunes to show you the duplicates. That’s easy. With your library still sorted by Title, click on File | Display Duplicates. This was when I started to get concerned. That’s a LOT of duplicate tracks.

If you want to reduce the work here a little, you can also ask iTunes to take a little more care with the selection. By default it’s only going to check the titles, but if you click on the Show All button to put things back to normal, and then go back through the process but this time hold the Shift key down while you click on File then you’ll get a Display Exact Duplicates option. For me, this made no difference at all but your mileage will vary depending on how you got the duplicates in the first place.

After that, the process consists of deleting the one (or more if necessary) duplicate files that you don’t want.

Getting help with the heavy lifting

http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/dupeelimlogo.jpgI investigated making use of third-party products to take the back-breaking repetition out of the process. Dupe Eliminator isn’t a free product, but the trial version will let you make use of the comprehensive duplicate selection criteria. Unfortunately, it won’t then remove all the duplicates automatically. I can understand that though, because why else would you purchase the full version? I moved on.

You Apple folk also have a whole stack of Apple Script options, but I can’t get near those.

My next option was a free piece of software called Duplicate Music File Finder. This one works outside iTunes, so there’s a need to clean up the resulting dead links afterwards. Hold your breath, start the app, point it at your music files, and let it check them out.

easy way to remove multiple duplicates in itunes

Just before we go further, a reminder. I’m trying to help, but the risk is yours. You need to have backed up all your music before you start.

Click the Check All button if you are happy that the duplicates have been selected, and then click on Delete Checked Files to actually remove them. Click Yes to confirm.

easy way to remove multiple duplicates in itunesThe application behaved for me exactly as expected, and all the duplicate files were moved to the Recycle Bin.

The last step in the process is to tell iTunes to take a look at itself, and remove any items in the library which no longer exist. Unfortunately there is no simple way in the iTunes interface to do this, so we need to cheat, just a little.

Apple has provided a script to do just this particular trick, and to make use of it you just need to do these things in order:

1.     Close iTunes if you have it open

2.     Go to the web page, right-click on it, and save the page as a file, making sure you change the extension to .js. So for instance, in Firefox, right-click on the page, choose Save page As… and change the file name from RemoveDeadTracks.txt to RemoveDeadTracks.js.

3.     Open Windows Explorer and browse to the file you just saved

4.     Double-click on the file.

The script will open iTunes, and then start running through and removing dead links. In my case it took around ten minutes and correctly removed nearly two thousand links.

Give yourself a pat on the back.

http://main.makeuseoflimited.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/itunesafter.jpg

I’d love to know how you go, whether you have found any more comprehensive tools, or if you can fathom how I got in this mess. In the comments, please.

Scan a Windows PC for Viruses from a Ubuntu Live CD

Scan a Windows PC for Viruses from a Ubuntu Live CD

Click here to read this article in a browser

Getting a virus is bad. Getting a virus that causes your computer to crash when you reboot is even worse. We’ll show you how to clean viruses from your computer even if you can’t boot into Windows by using a virus scanner in a Ubuntu Live CD.

There are a number of virus scanners available for Ubuntu, but we’ve found that avast! is the best choice, with great detection rates and usability.

Unfortunately, avast! does not have a proper 64-bit version, and forcing the install does not work properly. If you want to use avast! to scan for viruses, then ensure that you have a 32-bit Ubuntu Live CD.

If you currently have a 64-bit Ubuntu Live CD on a bootable flash drive, it does not take long to wipe your flash drive and go through our guide again and select normal (32-bit) Ubuntu 9.10 instead of the x64 edition. For the purposes of fixing your Windows installation, the 64-bit Live CD will not provide any benefits.

Once Ubuntu 9.10 boots up, open up Firefox by clicking on its icon in the top panel.

sshot-1

Navigate to http://www.avast.com/linux-home-edition.

sshot-2

Click on the Download tab, and then click on the link to download the DEB package.

sshot-3

Save it to the default location.

sshot-4

While avast! is downloading, click on the link to the registration form on the download page. Fill in the registration form if you do not already have a trial license for avast!.

sshot-5

By the time you’ve filled out the registration form, avast! will hopefully be finished downloading.

Open a terminal window by clicking on Applications in the top-left corner of the screen, then expanding the Accessories menu and clicking on Terminal.

sshot-6

In the terminal window, type in the following commands, pressing enter after each line.

cd Downloads
sudo dpkg –i avast*

sshot-7

This will install avast! on the live Ubuntu environment.

To ensure that you can use the latest virus database, while still in the terminal window, type in the following command:

sudo sysctl –w kernel.shmmax=128000000

sshot-7b

Now we’re ready to open avast!. Click on Applications on the top-left corner of the screen, expand the Accessories folder, and click on the new avast! Antivirus item.

sshot-8

You will first be greeted with a window that asks for your license key. Hopefully you’ve received it in your email by now; open the email that avast! sends you, copy the license key, and paste it in the Registration window.

sshot-9

avast! Antivirus will open. You’ll notice that the virus database is outdated.

sshot-10

Click on the Update database button and avast! will start downloading the latest virus database.

sshot-11

To scan your Windows hard drive, you will need to “mount” it. While the virus database is downloading, click on Places on the top-left of your screen, and click on your Windows hard drive, if you can tell which one it is by its size.

sshot-13

If you can’t tell which is the correct hard drive, then click on Computer and check out each hard drive until you find the right one. When you find it, make a note of the drive’s label, which appears in the menu bar of the file browser.

sshot-xx

Also note that your hard drive will now appear on your desktop.

sshot-14

By now, your virus database should be updated. At the time this article was written, the most recent version was 100404-0.

sshot-12

In the main avast! window, click on the radio button next to Selected folders and then click on the “+” button to the right of the list box. It will open up a dialog box to browse to a location.

sshot-15

To find your Windows hard drive, click on the “>” next to the computer icon. In the expanded list, find the folder labelled “media” and click on the “>” next to it to expand it. In this list, you should be able to find the label that corresponds to your Windows hard drive.

sshot-16

If you want to scan a certain folder, then you can go further into this hierarchy and select that folder. However, we will scan the entire hard drive, so we’ll just press OK.

sshot-17

Click on Start scan and avast! will start scanning your hard drive.

sshot-19

If a virus is found, you’ll be prompted to select an action. If you know that the file is a virus, then you can Delete it, but there is the possibility of false positives, so you can also choose Move to chest to quarantine it.

sshot-18

When avast! is done scanning, it will summarize what it found on your hard drive. You can take different actions on those files at this time by right-clicking on them and selecting the appropriate action. When you’re done, click Close.

sshot-20

Your Windows PC is now free of viruses, in the eyes of avast!. Reboot your computer and with any luck it will now boot up!
